"Hee Haw"Created by Frank Peppiatt and John Ayleswoth, the first "Hee Haw" show aired on CBS on June 15, 1969, as a summer replacement series for the "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." "Hee Haw" was such a resounding success that CBS slated the series for mid-season debut and it went on to be a huge sucesss. From December 17, 1969 thorough December 27, 1997, "Hee Haw" Shows were a weekly event in American households. A total of 585 one-hour shows were taped in Nashville, Tennessee, initially in 1969 at the CBS affiliate WLAC-TV (now WTVF-TV) and then moving to the Opryland Complex -Studio A in 1980.

"Hee Haw" was country music's answer to "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In." Gags, corny one-liners, skits -- many delivered from a cornfield with an animated donkey reacting to the humor -- was the basis for much of the show's material. Aside from the cornball humor was the first-rate country music. Co-hosts Buck Owens and Roy Clark were both major country stars, with Clark being one of the best banjoist-guitarists in his craft.

"Hee Haw" was dropped from CBS in 1971, a victim of CBS' decision to de-ruralize its programming (other shows like "Petticoat Junction, "Green Acres" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" got the axe as well). However, it went straight into syndication with all-new shows and stayed a ratings winner until it left the airwaves in 1997.

Major guests on the show included Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Barbara Mandrell, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Lee Greenwood, George Strait, The Judds, Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Alison Krauss, Trisha Yearwood and Diamond Rio.
