Mad Mike Moldies
Of the Pittsburgh Oldies DJ's Mad Mike was the most outrageous, his taste in music was all over the place but he was sure popular in the mid 60s on WZUM. Here are some Mad Mike favorites...Psycho - Sonics, Monkey Man - Baby Huey & The Babysiters, Price Of Love - Marshall & The Chi-Lites, Dutch Treat - Utopians & more.
Motown Hits in Pittsbuurgh
The Temptations, The Miracles, The Marvelettes & Jr. Walker were the the most popular Motown artists among Diner listeners. The Temptaitons hits I Want A Love I Can See & Lady Soul are always big favorites. The Miracles Would I Love You was the B Side in mot cities but not here in Pittsburgh. Same for The Marvelettes Forever, in most towns Locking up my Heart was the hit but here it was Forever. Jr. Walker's Shake & Fingerpop & I'm A Road Runner are Pittsburgh Classics.
Sweet 60's Soul In Pittsburgh
In the 60's most of Pittsburgh was divided, part of the city was into soul & the other part into the British Invasion. For those who preferred the soul sounds Jerry Butler, Impressions, Toys, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Gene Chandler were just a few of the artists that provided this great soul sound of the 60's.
Clark Race on Kdka in the 1960's
R.D. Summers had 2 favorite Disc Jockeys growing up, one was Porky Chedwick the other was Clark Race. Clark Race was one of Pittsburgh's greatest Jocks. He also provided us with some songs you only heard on Kdka back then such as Because Of You - Rome & Paris, It Ain't No Big Thing - Electrons, Cross My Heart - Billy Stewart, Hung Up - Racket Squad and others. Clark Race helped artists like Lou Christie & Tommy James become big stars.
Chuck Brinkman on KQV in the 1960's
What Clark Race was to Kdka Chuck Brinkman was to Kqv. Brinkman had that smooth Pittsburgh delivery in his voice and when you think of Kqv in the 60's he is probably the one you think about the most. Chuck Brinkman introduced us to some of The Vogues hits as well as Good Good Lovin by The Blossoms, Billy Stewart's Sitting In The Park & his airplay of High On A Hill made it the classic that is is today.
The R.D. Summers Sound
R.D. Summers started hosting the Sunday Night Oldies Diner in the early 1990's. There were a number of songs that were ignored until R.D. started playing them. Many of these songs would be considered Modern Doo-Wop or Beach Music or Shag. Etta James - At Last became a really big song after R.D. started playing it and it even was a former No. 1 on the Oldies Diner Countdown a few years back. R.D. made songs like Shama Lama, Morse Code Of Love, Looking For An Echo, Hug My Radiator, Rainy Day Belles, Jazzy Lady & others Pittsburgh Classics.
