This site is not
affiliated in any way with the WWE. This is simply a fan site
designed to bring back memories of the World Wide Wrestling
Federation between 1963 & 1979.
The WWWF was founded
by Vince McMahon Sr. & Toots Mondt in 1963 when Capital
Wrestling broke away from the NWA.
The WWWF served the
cities of New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Boston,
Washington D.C. & Baltimore along with many smaller towns
in nearby areas.
Buddy Rogers was
selected to be the first WWWF champion in 1963. Rogers was a
veteran wrestler who was really good in the ring and excellent
on the mic.
Rogers was up in age
in 1963 and only held the title for a few months when he was
defeated by Bruno Sammartino.
Sammartino went on to
hold the title until 1971 when he was defeated by Ivan Koloff.
Koloff held the title
very briefly when he was defeated by Pedro Morales.
Morales held the belt
for about 2 years and was defeated by Stan Stasiak in
Philadelphia.
Stasiak only held the
title for about a week when Bruno Sammartino defeated Stasiak
in 1973.
Bruno lost the belt in
a controversial match against Superstar Billy Graham in 1977.
Graham held onto the
title for less than a year when newcomer Bob Backlund defeated
Graham in 1978.
The WWWF in 1979
became the WWF and was known as the World Wrestling Federation
instead of the World Wide Wrestling Federation.
