1963 1963 was the first year of the WWWF as Vince McMahon Sr. & Toots Mondt broke away from the NWA. Buddy Rogers was selected as the first WWWF Champion. Rogers defended his title against Bobo Brazil, Miguel Perez, Buddy Austin, Ed Carpentier & Killer Kowalski.Rogers was defeated by Bruno Sammartino on May 17, 1963. Sammartino held the title until 1971. The 3 main challengers to Bruno Sammartino in 1963 were Hans Mortier, Killer Buddy Austin & The Shadow. Others who had title shots were Gorilla Monsoon, Killer Kowalski & Skull Murphy & Brute Bernard.
Tag Teams The year started with the Skull Murphy & Brute Bernard as the Tag Team Champions. In November one of the WWWF greatest Tag Teams Gorilla Monsoon & Killer Kowalski won the titles from Murphy & Bernard. In December the Tolos Brothers won the Tag Team titles.

Misc 1963 WWWF The Pittsburgh Pa. area had its own TV show called Studio Wrestling and the Pittsburgh office had a number of local stars who included Johnny Defazio, Ace Freeman, Hurricane Hunt, Frank Holtz, TNT Napolitean, & Jim Grabmire. Dory Dixon who was the WWWA Champion competed in the WWWF during 1963 and had a very good year. The Magnificent Maurice & Johnny Barrend were an entertaining mid level Tag Team in 1963, Maurice turned on Barrend and they started a feud. They did team up for a match in Pittsburgh in August because Pittsburgh fans didn't get the weekly WWWF show and had no idea they had a feud earlier in the year. |
