1973 1973 was a busy year as Pedro Morales Started the year as champion but would be defeated late in the year. Morales took on some tough competition in 1973 such as Moondog Mayne, Mr. Fuji, George Steele, Fred Blassie & Professor Tanaka. Stan Stasiak defeated Morales on Dec. 1, 1973. Stasiak had only one title defense against Chief Jay Strongbow. Bruno Sammartino defeated Stasiak on Dec. 10th to regain the title he held a few years earlier. Sammartino had title defenses against The Sheik & Johnny Valiant in 1973.
Tag Teams The year started with Professor Tanaka & Mr. Fuji as the WWWF Tag Team Champions. On May 30th the team of Haystacks Calhoun & Tony Garea defeated the team of Fuji & Tanaka. On September 11 Fuji & Tanaka won back the belts from Calhoun & Garea. In November Tony Garea & Dean Ho defeated the Japanese duo to win the WWWF Tag Team Titles.

Some future WWWF stars were being groomed in Pittsburgh as John L Sullivan (Johnny Valiant), Larry Zbyszko & Bill Eadie (Masked Superstar) were all competing. Johnny DeFazio & Geeto Mongol phased out their version of the Tag Team Title as they only had one match in 1973 against the Kangaroos. The Pittsburgh territory was being run by Geeto Mongol & later Pedro Martinez, many old time stars wrestled only in Pittsburgh during 1973. Waldo Von Erich, Dom DeNucci, Killer Kowalski, Tony Parisi, Eric The Red & Dr. Bill Miller. Dory Funk Sr. dies at the age of 54, he appeared in the WWWF just months prior to his death wrestling Victor Rivera. |
